METAP Webinar: Ecological Effects of Marine Hydrokinetic Technology Projects

Thursday, August 19, 2010 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

To date, marine hydrokinetic (MHK) systems and their impacts have not been widely tested. As more MHL projects are going through state and federal licensing applications, understanding of potential environmental impacts to aquatic organisms and marine ecosystems continues to increase. This webinar focuses on the MHL environmental permitting process in the U.S., environmental challenges posed by MHK projects, risk evaluation, decision support tools, and potential adaptive management strategies.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Rodney Cluck, Chief, Environmental Sciences Branch, Dept. of Interior (slides)
  • Andrea Copping, Senior Program Manager for Coastal and Marine Waters, Marine Sciences Laboratory, Pacific NW National Lab (slides)
  • Dr.Howard Hanson, Scientific Director, Center for Ocean Energy Technology, Florida Atlantic University (slides)
  • Bridgett Lohrman, Fish Biologist, National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA (slides)
  • Tim Konnert and Ken Hogan, Fish Biologist, Office of Energy Projects, Division of Hydropower Licensing, FERC (slides)

This webinar is the 4th in a series for the State/Federal Marine Energy Technology Advancement Project (METAP). The goal of the METAP project is to acceleratre the commercialization of marine hydrokinetic (wave, tidal and current) technologies in the U.S. through creation of a strategic partnership between states, the US DOE, NREL, and the industry. This project is coordinated by the Clean Energy States Alliance in partnership with the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), and the Association of State Energy Research and Technology Transfer Institutions (ASERTTI). The initiative is funded by NREL and implemented in cooperation with the US DOE Wind and Water Power Program.
