RiverSmart Washington Project Advertised for Construction Contractor Bids

First Neighborhood-Wide Installation of Low Impact Development Practices to Capture and Infiltrate Stormwater

(Washington D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advertised this week for contractor bids to construct the RiverSmart Washington Project. The project will be constructed in two neighborhoods: in Petworth at Iowa Avenue and Webster Street NW and in Chevy Chase at Quesada Street and 33rd Street NW.

RiverSmart Washington, a public-private sector partnership, aims to measure whether installing attractive, eco-friendly landscaping and innovative streetscaping in two neighborhoods can reduce polluted runoff into Rock Creek. Through this effort, the District is installing measures such as permeable pavement in alleyways and parking lanes, and street-side rain gardens to capture and infiltrate stormwater from the public right of way. DDOT will use this as a pilot project to combine stormwater management with infrastructure improvements to replicate in future street reconstruction projects. Upon completion of the project, the site will be monitored to evaluate the amount of stormwater captured by the practices.

The District’s RiverSmart Washington Project was awarded a 2012 Vision Award by the Committee of 100 on the Federal City, acknowledging its important environmental benefits to the city. The RiverSmart Washington Project is a partnership led by the District Department of the Environment and DDOT and includes funding from DC Water and a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
