RPS Webinar: Energy Storage and Renewable Portfolio Standards

Monday, December 19, 2011 @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

This webinar, presented by the Clean Energy States Alliance for the State-Federal RPS Collaborative, explores the role of energy storage in state RPS, including facilitating the integration of an increasingly higher penetration of renewables and the interpretation of energy storage as a generation resource. Panelists reviewed and highlighted examples of state RPS that include energy storage while exploring the benefits of energy storage to an RPS portfolio and the challenges for integrating storage into new and existing RPS programs.

Guest Speakers:

  • Imre Gyuk, Program Manager, Energy Storage Research, U.S. DOE, presented an overview of energy storage.
  • Jacquelynne Hernandez, Technical Staff, Sandia National Laboratories, provided an overview of energy storage inclusion in state RPSs.
  • Dhruv Bhatnagar, Sandia National Laboratories, provided an overview of energy storage technologies and applications, examples of state RPS including energy storage, PUC dockets that have included a discussion of storage, and the energy storage handbook for PUCs that is in the works.
  • Verne Loose, Sandia National Laboratories, discussed benefits and challenges of including energy storage in RPS – from supporting RPS implementation to more general grid support – as well as opportunities to do so. Verne also discussed the classification of storage as a grid asset and the relationship of that to jurisdictional issues.
